Soulsteps & Dreamsongs folk,

What inspires you to create ritual dance, song and movement ?

Where and how do you like to perform your movement rituals ?

Is there someone, or some group performing this work that you really admire ?

What are your processes as you begin to create works ?

Do you find inspiration in someone's writings and ideas, or do you work from a place of intuitive, internal unfolding & self-discovery ?

Great questions. So much to say. I could write a small book.
I think I will start with one or two questions. What inspires me are the many layers of being. I am inspired by the earth and the environment, by spirit, by relationships, dreams, the community, and connecting through cycles of rhythm and chaos. My practice is intuitive. I usually recieve a song or movement, and I try to follow it as it moves through me. I notice what qualities or states are present, what patterns and emphasize those and play with them. It is really that process of noticing, tracking, and somtimes framing or setting the sound and movement. The experience of connecting with source and being gifted with song and dance, and moving and sounding with the environment, sometimes with a group- that inspires me to co-create ritual, healing, and prayer.
I work wherever i am called to work- my ritual space, the woods, the street, a theater, someones backyard, a warehouse event. I especially like being where i can touch the earth and see the sky, but the cement works too.
I like working alone, and with others. Some of the work is for personal healing, and some of it to share and create with a group.
I want to hear what others have to say.

      inspiration
      digging down deep inside
knowing that there is only that
      that it must be expressed
how to express in a way that is seen
      does it matter?
no i do not think that it does
if others are to see it they will.
the connection to... spirit, others spirits, this earth, the ethers.

yay uma thanks for sparking this conversation on tis tribal level, it's exciting to open it up and hear all, and connect with so many more on these vital subjects, ideas, feelings

    wonderfull questions, Marcus.
I am inspired by a deep longing to be with spirit. to feel connected to the earth. to experience a knowing that spirit is with me all ways, that i am awakenning more and more to coming home to my soul, and that i am home, here and now.
I find inspiration in the deep sorrow of longing. I find it in the joy of being free in this world.
I've always worked intuitively since before i can remember. I've worked in dark smoky chambers and under the full moon with the earth and moss between my toes. connection to source happens where it may. chanting and singing in the deepths of a concrete parking garage can be as spiritually intoxicating as in the hollow redwood, though i'll opt for the trees anyday. sponteniety is a halmark of the playfull spirit. and spirit is at home in all things.

Sometimes your life goes crazy, and you're lower back is all fucked up, and all you can perform is a vague semblance of movement to a song by Faun Fables where Dawn and Nils start screaming their heads off at each other.... and it all seems okay.... you're boyfriend has just gone nuts, you decide that it's necessary for you to buy a 40 of Corona and and bean burrito from El Pollo Loco, go home, get dizzy and beany, and forget that your lower back is hurting and that you're boyfriend is crazy to listen to two musicians/lovers screaming their heads off at each other just so you could have this moment.

Every once in awhile, you'll run into someone who you feel was placed in your path for a reason...you've just gone to your therapist and realize you need to work on your boundaries and finally get to the root of your "daddy issues", and then you toodle on down to Venice beach to give the ocean your leftover emotional shit. You run into an old friend, you see a thousand-petaled lotus in the sky- and are reminded that you're healing angel is here and that today must be a good day.

You then sidle on over to the boardwalk and are hit on by every other man you see. You begin to get annoyed at this and wonder why this is happening? And then... a man starts walking next to you as you are returning to your car, and he tells you that your kidneys and digestive system are having problems. You assume he's clairvoyant; he also adds that he's a psychic and a healer, and you test this out. Goddamn, he couldn't have known that much about you. He says your energy is moving around in such a way that he could help you- and fast. You're a good person after all. You follow this man home, testing him the whole way there, deciding he's the real thing. You get to his home. He has a harmonium. You play with it for awhile, chant some, and then take off all your clothes so this man can dig into your muscles...and feel your sex chakra. Things are going alright, you realize the sex chakra is all a part of the whole. You tell him you've had a systemic yeast infection- he proceeds to touch you where no healer should touch you without asking. It feels good, but then it feels wrong, and then you notice how the sexual heat is making the pain in your shoulders more intense. You consider it a learning experience and then ask him, "Is there really a purpose to all this?" He stops this business and continues to work you over. You go home with mixed feelings about the experience. A few weeks later, you go over to a good friends' house and notice that he has a harmonium also. What's more, he's selling it for cheap. You remember the harmonium fondly from your experience with the strange healer from the boardwalk. Krishna Das has one too! You tell your friend you'll buy it from him. All was not for naught.

I gotta say... when this tribe started, I was excited. I would sign on every day in hopes that someone had written something new. And while I'm sure that there are people here who have experienced the depth, intimacy, spirituality, and vulnerability that such an art lends itself to, I have been mildly disappointed by the watered down version of the details and intricacies of life that really inspire one to create. Of course it is the spirit, relationships, earth, chaos and order that inspire us- but these things are intuitive and obvious. This post is not meant to rain on anyone's parade. It is simply to say that life, at best, is a meaty and complex delicacy which I have been hoping people in this tribe would feel open to share. And I dearly hope, that my approach from a standpoint of critique rather than gentle entreating doesn't work to the opposite effect in shutting people down from sharing the real juice that life is.

I'm sure it is apparent from my above posts that life's difficulties are what have been inspiring me to create as of late, but it wouldn't be very interesting if I just said, "My inspiration as of late has come from the difficulties of life and the need to find an artistic mirror for my own inner chaos." I know that when it comes to being inspired by spirit- it can be harder to put such a detailed face to what this looks like through words. But it is not impossible, and I would greatly appreciate if you would now share the detailed face of just one musical/movement experience that was truly inspired. Please feel free to use all six senses.

      :-) :-( ;-) :-O

        Kavindra-
I appreciate your call for the deeper shit. Thank you.
I also want to just honor the past postings and say that we have been checking in, testing the waters, finding out where some of us come from. I have also appreciated the honesty and intensity of your postings.
I started this tribe in hopes of holding space for many voices and possibilities around this kind of work, technical, personal, relational, world issues, etc.
I would like to support speaking about the suffering, disorientation, the stuff that really pushes us into moments of intense creative process, and at the same time hold space for the "intuitive and obvious" because it occurs to me that there are folks that might visit this tribe that may want to learn about, or affirm things that are just being revealed to them through the process of thier unfolding (which is different for all{I know this is obvious)). They are welcome to share from where they are coming from, watered down, full of blood, drenched in new age ketchup, all of it.
And also I have been hoping someone would push on the edges a little.
So I truly appreciate that you have stepped up and are speaking out, asking us to share the deeper stuff. And I also hope that those who are feeling open to share will do so, and I welcome those who would like to discuss the process side of it as well.

Your posting has had me brewing for a few days now.
it is so exciting that we have these spheres to spin our musings and deepen, so lets deepen.
            our bodies our moves
the insanity that keeps us sane
the release that keeps us intact
the heat that keeps us cool
the exhaustion that keeps us awake to ourselves as humans
